Anyone ever used a Rotozip or other spiral bit cutting tool to make a mortise? I was wondering if I drill a couple of overlapping holes next to each other making an starter area big enough to insert a spiral bit, I could then cut the mortise. Is this practical? Or dangerous? Could I use a drill press? Answers appreciated.

Any method would work, it may be a little harder and more time consuming but I am sure you could get the job done that way! I would get an inexpensive router and get the job done much easier and accurate that way

The rotozip spiral bits are quite flexible when used at their factory length. I don't use them for binding, But I use an abrasive wheel to cut them shorter, then to resharpen the tip. After modification I use them to cut out the mortice for rosettes, and for cutting out the soundhole. They do a good job, and the price is right.
